Cardiff boss Warnock slams Liverpool over Clyne loan

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has criticised Liverpool for transferring Nathaniel Clyne to Bournemouth, claiming he was “promised” the defender’s services.

Clyne has dramatically fallen down the pecking order at Anfield following the development of youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.

The Londoner is clearly surplus to requirements at the Reds and after struggling to earn regular first-team action in the first half of the season, he was sent on loan to the Cherries this week.

The 27-year-old may have fallen down the Reds’ pecking order, but his presence will bolster Eddie Howe’s side. He certainly would have been a sound addition to Cardiff’s squad as the Welsh outfit look to avoid relegation this season.

Bluebirds manager Warnock is also intimately familiar with Clyne as the duo worked together previously at Crystal Palace. As a result, the veteran boss is aggrieved with both club and player. As quoted by The Daily Star, Warnock said: “I was disappointed with Nathaniel Clyne. Having known the player and given him his debut, I’m disappointed not just with the boy himself but with Liverpool as well for not ringing me.

“To see it on television when I’ve done everything right and they’ve promised that he’s my player this week, it’s a disgrace for me; it’s a lack of class, isn’t it?”

Bournemouth, meanwhile, will be thankful Liverpool ultimately decided on them as a more appropriate destination for their defender. The England international is exactly the type of player the Cherries need as they look to rediscover their mojo and ensure that they finish strongly in the top half of the standings this term.

Clyne is now in an environment where he is likely to play regularly. This will also help him regain some of the confidence that he will have lost due to being on the bench for long periods at Anfield.
