If you’re one of the longest-running wrestling games on the block, you probably don’t pay much attention to what the “haters” are saying and you do your own thing.
But that doesn’t stop us from having a few opinions about what WWE 2K20 should do to improve itself over 2K19.
First, we’ll give you a few predictions about what we think will be the major themes of 2K20 and then we’ll move on to what we want to see changed.
Probably the biggest thing we think that will be front and centre – perhaps uncomfortably so – is that 2K20 is going to go all out on the online modes and rankings as well as gear itself towards attracting the eSports crowd.
Let’s face it: eSports, for better or worse, have changed the concept of fighting games. Heck, Dead or Alive 6 even promised to tone down some of its raunchier elements so it could become a titan of the eSports scene (that didn’t quite work out, though, did it).
We think WWE 2K20 will be pretty much the same story but hopefully with a little more success. Online play has always figured prominently in the game, but it’s about to become a whole much bigger deal.
As for what changes we’d like to see in WWE 2K20?
One thing we’d like to see is a robust female career mode. There are plenty of WWE female superstars at this point, and WWE 2K20 needs to start helping tell their story. Plus, it would just avoid a bunch of unnecessary controversy. Then again, even this, if implemented, would probably be some source of scandal but its omission would be something much more difficult to apologise for in the end. It’s 2K20, after all, let’s start living like it.
Another thing from 2K19 that needs serious attention is the commentary. It either needs to make sense or it needs to go entirely. Nothing quite ruins the match like calling a she a he or saying something that makes no sense at all. Given the generally-low bar most networks hold for sports commentators, this is pretty glaring.
To keep the game current, the devs should also consider updating the roster of wrestlers to better reflect their changed performance and rankings over the year. The static stats of the past just won’t cut it anymore, especially when 2K19 didn’t shy away from frequent online events and updates to other aspects of the game.
Rethink the contextual controls. In fact, please simplify them. This scheme favours people who have played previous games and is nearly incomprehensible to people who have not.
Speaking of which, making movement more fluid and eliminating the glitches associated with movement and contextual controls will probably help the company achieve its goal of making WWE 2K20 a Twitch-able game. No one wants to watch tournaments of glitches and awkward controls, and WWE 2K20 needs to get on top of that.
Lastly, consider merging fighting styles for a customised style. Most wrestlers today use a blended style that doesn’t fit into the game’s neat categories. Recognising this and allowing for a more customised approach will help WWE 2K20 catapult itself over its predecessor.
