Manny Pacquiao and his representatives are reportedly in talks with the representatives of Floyd Mayweather over a possible re-match between the two boxing icons.
The first match between the two took place in 2015 and was dubbed ”the fight of the century”. It was however rather underwhelming and resulted in a points victory for Mayweather. Pacquiao has however claimed that he had an injured shoulder during the fight and has been pushing hard for a re-match. Freddie Roach, who is Pacquiao’s trainer, has claimed that Mayweather’s camp had known about the injury even before the fight had taken place.
Pacquiao is, however, keeping his options open ahead of his next fight and is set to fly to Arlington, Texas to watch the March 16th fight between Errol Spence Jr and Mikey Garcia. Pacquiao will reportedly fight the winner of this clash if he does not manage to reach a consensus with Mayweather’s team.
Mayweather retired later in 2015 after his 49th professional fight and career victory against Andre Berto. He did however make a one-match comeback to fight against UFC star Conor McGregor, and won his 50th fight in convincing, yet unsurprising, fashion.
Since then, Mayweather has issued mixed statements about another comeback. Some of his comments have indicated that he has no interest in returning to the ring, whilst others have suggested that he could come back if the money is right.
Mayweather is also set to fight again in Japan in July in an exhibition match against a yet to be named opponent. The match will be similar to the one he took part in during December 2018 where he dominated Japanese youngster Tenshin Nasukawa.
He may fight Pacquaio if the money is good. “The negotiations are on-going,” Pacquiao told rappler.com when asked about the status of his possible fight with Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao revealed that “there will be updates”.
