One thing gamers love is a good, old-fashioned competition between choice A and B. Apex Legends and Fortnite are fulfilling that wish, as we compare the former’s explosive growth with the latter’s somewhat brief dominance over the battle royale genre.
Of course, both of them are continuing to overshadow the OG of everything – PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
But does it really matter whether or not Apex Legends or Fortnite has the “biggest community” or “makes the most money”?
Sure, if you’re the companies behind them, you should probably give a damn. But for the rest of us? Isn’t it silly to wish ill on one over the other?
Here we’re really talking about Fortnite and its detractors, of which there are many, particularly parents and even schools.
Some people just hate Fortnite and hope anything will displace it. Others really just love Apex Legends, but they don’t have nearly the foundation in the greater internet than those who hate Fortnite do.
There are tons of memes out there attesting to this and, from some perspectives, it is understandable.
From its cell-shaded graphics to its bizarre gameplay style, Fortnite is different and some people really hate that.

It’s a solid game, all around, but it is easy to see why some people would be immediately turned off or even intimidated by it.
The thing that matters most for all of us is that both of them succeed.
It is kind of a like a rising tide lifts all boats situation.
Younger audiences love Fortnite and are veritably obsessed with it.
We’ve all been there and we know how important those early experiences can be.
One thing that Fortnite has in its column is that, like many of the childhood classics most of us remember, it’s free to play. Sure, you can get cosmetic stuff, but the core game is there for the taking.
That opens up gaming to a lot of communities that might not otherwise have that access.
And that’s a great thing for us all because, at the end of the day, we want gaming to grow.
Again, memes and jokes are all good, but when it spills into wishing ill on one thing or the other it is probably best that we all take a step back and remember that doing such things is nothing but an exercise in futility.
Whether or not Apex Legends overtakes Fortnite or not really doesn’t matter because it is great that both of them are doing so well.
As Fortnite itself has proven, popularity is fleeting. No one would have predicted that MOBAs would be DOA now or that PUBG would be third-wheel to the Fortnite/Apex Legends duel to the death.

The important thing is that the industry keeps growing and that new gamers are welcomed into the community whether it be through Fortnite or some other game. It’s about having fun, not having the largest online community or spending the most money with a developer.
