Selections and analysis for all eight of the thoroughbred Group races for today’s action at Meydan.
The thoroughbred action kicks off with the Godolphin Mile and Muntazah looks like one of the more solid betting favourites on today’s card. The six-year-old has been a shining light in what has to be considered a below par year for trainer Doug Watson but a reproduction of gelding’s course and distance success last time out should see him hard to beat. The American raiders True Timber and Coal Front could give him most to think about.
Selection: Muntazah
Roughie: True Timber
Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter returns without a prep run in the Dubai Gold Cup. However, a reproduction of his effort in Australia should see him hard to beat. Many of the middle to long distance races have been run at a crawl at Meydan this season and if that’s the case again, it could suit Team Talk who has an excellent turn of foot.
Selection: Cross Counter
Roughie: Team Talk
The Al Quoz Sprint is one of the best six furlong races on the planet. Blue Point is a worthy favourite for the race and with the ground drying out conditions looks certain to be in his favour. Australian challenger Brave Smash has probably been underestimated and makes some each-way appeal at bigger odds.
Selection: Blue Point
Roughie: Brave Smash
The UAE Derby looks like the hardest race on the card to solve. Japan have several live chances on the card and Derma Louvre makes most appeal at the current odds. Al Hayette is the outsider of the field but is one of the few capable of facing the kickback and might be able to run in to a place at big odds.
Selection: Derma Louvre
Roughie: Al Hayette
Given the withdrawal of Roy H earlier in the week, X Y Jet is going to be hard to beat if he can grab the rail in Golden Shaheen. He’s been unlucky not to win this race, nabbed on the line last year, and there’s every chance he can go one better in a below par renewal of the race.
Selection: X Y Jet
Roughie: Switzerland
Almond Eye (NAP) has the potential to be the star of the show in the Dubai Turf and while she’s been well found in the market, this looks like a good starting place for an international campaign that will crescendo to an Arc bid. Century Dream has settled in well and makes some each-way appeal at 40/1.
Selection: Almond Eye
Roughie: Century Dream
The Dubai Sheema Classic is always a highlight on the $35 million card but it’s a hard race to find the winner of this year. Old Persian has gone from strength to strength while Rey de Oro probably has the best chance on form. However, the latter’s performance in this race last year has to be a concern when sent off favourite. Cheval Grand could be the one to be interested in at a bigger price.
Selection: Old Persian
Roughie: Cheval Grand
Saeed Bin Suroor bids for an eighth win in the race with Thunder Snow but that contender is going to struggle to reverse form with Capezzano who beaten by almost 10 lengths last time out. A wide draw (12) makes the task even tougher and there’s plenty to like about Capezzano’s (Next Best) chance. The five-year-old has got better with every start this year and there’s was nothing wrong with the time of the race last time. North America is the main danger but Audible makes more appeal from an each-way perspective.
Selection: Capezzano
Roughie: Cheval Grand
