Harry Redknapp believes that Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is already under pressure and could face the axe at Old Trafford.
“I do not for one minute want Solskjaer to fail but already it feels like the scale of the job could be too big for him,” Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“We do not know if United tried to lure Mauricio Pochettino from Tottenham but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward must be wondering if he has made a mistake. Solskjaer has been entrusted with one of the biggest brands in world sport. It is now six years and counting since United last won the Premier League title.
“Regardless of the size of the task at hand, he will be under immense pressure should United be several points off the pace and languishing in sixth place again come October.”
The Norwegian was appointed to lead the Red Devils on an interim basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last December, before being appointed as his full-time successor. United initially played an impressive brand of football under their former striker – many comparing it to the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, United have struggled to churn out consistent results since Solskjaer was given the job on a permanent basis. Their 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town last weekend means that they are now not in the reckoning and will have to settle for a place in the Europa League next season. United have won just two out of their last 11 games.
The club have major structural issues at present and it will be difficult for any manager to do well with them. They clearly need a summer overhaul. The club needs to offload Alexis Sanchez and bring in a new centre-back, striker and specialist right-back. If Solskjaer fails to find consistency next season, then they can put him under pressure.
