Nathan Coulter-Nile hits out at Australian cricket selectors

Share

Nathan Coulter-Nile has hit out at selectors after being left out of the Australian ODI squad set to face India.

The Aussies have made wholesale changes to their ODI squad after they were comprehensively beaten by South Africa recently. They are not among the favourites to win the 2019 Cricket World Cup, which will be played in England this year. They are, however, looking for their best combinations ahead of the tournament.

Coulter-Nile has had bad luck with injuries throughout the years. As such, he has been restricted to just 22 ODIs and 26 T20is in his career thus far. Australia’s chief selector Trevor Hohns said, as quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald, that they were not prepared to ”risk” him citing ”some lower back soreness”.

The bowler has since hit back, claiming that he did not have a scan when the squad was announced on Friday. He also claimed that he had told coach Justin Langer only that he had a sore back.

Coulter-Nile surely in doubt for World Cup

Coulter-Nile played for the Perth Scorchers on Sunday as they lost a Big Bash game to the Brisbane Heat. Of course, the workload of T20s compared to one-dayers can be quite different. Whatever the case is, his omission will certainly dent his chances of being part of the Australian squad that will travel to England.

Fast bowlers who managed to win selection to the 14-man squad to play against India included Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

“I didn’t take it the best to be honest. I think it was communicated to me really poorly,” Coulter-Nile told ABC Grandstand. “I won’t go into it but I don’t think soreness is any excuse for not playing cricket.

“In fairness I hadn’t had a [back] scan yet, I had back soreness and back history, so I had a scan to see what was wrong.

“I had one when I got home and it was also clear so I’m looking forward to playing for the Scorchers and getting out there.”
