Football fancies for the weekend: Saturday 12th January

Share

With another week of league action upon us and with several title races hotting up, we take a look at the best bets for the weekend’s action.

There’s little better place to start than the top of the table clash in League One, where third-placed Sunderland host second-placed Luton Town.

The Hatters travel to the Stadium of Light with the recent departure of their manager Nathan Jones, who left to join Stoke earlier this week.

Jones also took several key members of his backroom staff to the bet365 Stadium and the decision is sure to have dealt a blow to Luton’s preparation for this game.

Not only this, but Sunderland have entered a purple patch of form of late, winning four of their last six games in all competitions and conceding just two goals in the process.

At a best-price of 16/11, Sunderland look great value to claim a vital victory and move above Luton in the table, with a game in hand to further chase down league-leaders Portsmouth.

The Black Cats have won two of their last three home fixtures and the current disarray at The Hatters make this the ideal opportunity to claim a valuable three points.

Aside from League One, there’s a wealth of action in the Championship and their fixtures culminate in Aston Villa travelling to the DW Stadium to face Wigan, in what should be a victory for The Villains.

A win could propel Villa to just two points outside of the Championship play-off places – should results go their way throughout the day – whilst Wigan are struggling to stay afloat of the relegation places.

Championship top scorer Tammy Abraham recently committed his short-term future to Villa Park, pledging to help their play-off push until the end of the season rather than join Premier League outfit Wolves and this looks a prime opportunity to add to his 16-goal tally.

Wigan have failed to keep a clean sheet in all five of their last Championship games, conceding a total of 11 goals. Villa meanwhile have scored ten in their last five with Abraham notching five of them.

With all things considered, the best-price of 9/4 for Abraham to score and Villa to win looks a shrewd bet in what could be a runaway victory.

Finally, we arrive at the Premier League where a shrewd outright win bet can be found in the weekend’s relegation dogfight between Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town.

City are best-price 13/10 to beat Huddersfield, with the home side currently sitting 17th and looking for a win to push themselves away from the relegation zone. The Terriers meanwhile, are in free-fall and have their last nine games in all competitions.

Cardiff meanwhile, aren’t in the best of form but have won three of their last five home games and finally look to be playing with some confidence after their promotion to the Premier League.

With Huddersfield conceding ten goals in their last five Premier League games and even losing to fellow strugglers Fulham and Burnley, this looks a great opportunity for Neil Warnock’s men to claim a valuable three points in the race for elite safety.

Bet 1: Sunderland to beat Luton – 16/11

Bet 2: Aston Villa to win and Tammy Abraham to score – 9/4

Bet 3: Cardiff to beat Huddersfield – 13/10
