Football fancies for the weekend: Saturday 19th January

Share

Unfortunately, it was a losing start to TSR’s Football Fancies, with both Sunderland and Cardiff drawing at home and Aston Villa crashing to an astonishing 3-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

Despite this, The Sports Report are back this week with three more tips ahead of the weekend’s action. With many supporters for Cardiff and Villa dubbing their performances as ‘the worst of the season’, it can’t possibly get any worse than last week, can it?

Goals at both ends at St Mary’s

Where better to start than the Premier League, where a revitalised Southampton take on Marco Silva’s Everton at St Mary’s.

The Saints have begun to build momentum since the appointment of Ralph Hassenhuttl, with the German overseeing three wins and two draws since taking charge in early December – accounting for more than half of their Premier League points tally.

Everton meanwhile have a point to prove after their owner’s recent scathing remarks on their season. Farhad Moshiri didn’t hold back in lamenting the team’s current league position and Marco Silva will need results on the field to ease the pressure.

It’s all set up for goals and the stats are there to suggest both teams to score is the sensible bet in this game – BTTS has landed in five of the last seven meetings between the two sides in the league.

Not only this but Southampton have seen BTTS land in eight of their last ten games and in all six of their last home games across all competitions.

Everton meanwhile have seen BTTS in six of their last ten games and with Richardson at the front of their attack, it’s likely the Brazilian will end up on the scoresheet, especially given Southampton have conceded two or more goals in five of their last six home games. Hopefully, this game will be goals galore.

BTTS in Southampton vs Leicester – 7/10

The Dons to prevail in play-off push

Next we head to League Two, where MK Dons can get their promotion push back on track with a home win over mid-table Crewe.

The Dons have actually lost three of their last five games in League Two, seeing them slump to fourth in the division from second place at the end of December.

MK have won four of their last five games at home to nil though and with Crewe earning just one point from their last five away games, this looks the ideal opportunity to bounce back.

Forward Kieran Agard and midfielder Chuks Anike have contributed 22 goals between them so far this season for The Dons, residing near the top of the League Two goalscoring charts. Crewe meanwhile have conceded the joint-ninth highest goals this season, it looks a fair bet that the home side will emerge victorious on Saturday.

MK Dons to beat Crewe – 8/11

Pompey to up their game at Oxford

Finally, League One sees league-leaders Portsmouth travel to Oxford in a bid to avenge their shock home defeat to Blackpool last weekend.

The loss halted a run of four consecutive victories for Pompey and they will be hopeful that their strong away form this season will mean the momentum isn’t halted too much.

Oxford meanwhile were building some serious momentum throughout November and December but have recently lost three of their last five games in all competitions.

Their home form does inspire optimism having won three of their last five games at The Kassam but Pompey have won all but four of their away games this season, scoring 30 goals in the process.

For that reason, it makes sense to assume that Portsmouth will add to their impressive away tally this season and claim a valuable victory as they look to maintain their four point cushion at the top of League One.

Portsmouth to beat Oxford – 13/10

Saturday 19th January bet recap:

Bet 1 – BTTS in Southampton vs Everton – 7/10

Bet 2 – MK Dons to beat Crewe – 8/11

Bet 3 – Portsmouth to beat Oxford – 13/10
