Manchester United have awarded veteran Ashley Young a new one-year contract extension. He is now set to remain at the club until the summer of 2020.
The 33-year-old’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season. Young is one of United’s longest-serving players and is one of the few survivors remaining from the glorious era of Sir Alex Ferguson.
He joined the Red Devils in a £17 million from Aston Villa in 2011. Since then, he has gone on to make 227 appearances in all competitions, scoring 17 goals. During his time at United, he has won one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one League Cup and one Europa League.
Although now past his prime, Young has been a valuable squad player for United this season. He is a very versatile player, being able to operate as a winger, wing back or full back.
Young made his debut for England in 2007. He has made 39 appearances for the Three Lions, scoring several goals. He represented England at Euro 2012 and, more recently, during the 2018 World Cup. While he has not officially retired from international football, it would be rather surprising if he gets another call-up as Gareth Southgate looks to build a youthful England squad that can challenge for honours at future tournaments.
Young now becomes the sixth United player to receive a new deal this season, along with the likes of defenders Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, and midfielder Scott McTominay.
