Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has said that he is calm about his contract situation. The veteran’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire during the summer transfer window, prompting speculation about his future.
Kompany has only made 14 appearances in all competitions so far this season due to injury problems, which have plagued his career in recent years.
Even though he is now 32 years old, Kompany, when fit, is still one of the best defenders in the Premier League and good enough to represent one of the world’s best teams in City. He is also a club legend at the Etihad Stadium and the only player in the squad who was present when the revolution began at the club in 2008.
The Belgian arrived at City from German club Hamburg in 2008. He has since gone on to make 347 appearances for the Cityzens in all competitions, scoring 19 goals. During his time at City, Kompany has won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups and two Community Shields.
He is also a one-time Manchester City Official Supporters’ Player of the Year as well as a one-time Manchester City Players’ Player of the Year. City should ideally try to keep Kompany at the club for at least another two years. He is still able to compete at the highest level and will provide valuable experience to Pep Guardiola’s team for some time to come.
As quoted by Manchester Evening News, Kompany said: “I’m just very fortunate in that I have a very good relationship with the club and I don’t need to force myself into making decisions.
“The club also doesn’t need to rush in making a decision – that’s not what it’s about. There are still four competitions still to play for, this could still be the best-ever season we’ve experienced and that is the priority. Everything else, we can sit down, have a chat, have a drink and make a decision that’s best for everyone.”
