The president of European MMA promotion Cage Warriors has provided an injury update after one of its fighters suffered a horrific leg break this weekend.
Rising star Sofiane Boukichou saw his main event at CW101 cut short just a minute in, after opponent Tom Aspinall expertly checked a hard inside leg kick that immediately broke the Frenchman’s leg. It was a disappointing and bizarre ending to a wild night of fights at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool.
Warning: graphic injury below.
While Boukichou (6-3) would have hoped for a highlight-reel victory, instead footage of his injury has gone viral on social media over the past 24 hours, with many observers drawing comparisons to the freak leg fractures suffered by Anderson Silva and the late Corey Hill in the UFC.
Today, Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan issued a brief update on the condition of Boukichou, posting a photo of the star laid in a hospital bed.
Thankfully, it appears as though the French fighter is in good spirits despite requiring an operation on his injured leg. While no timeline has yet been given with regards to his potential layoff, Boylan stated that he would be “back dancing soon”.
Aspinall, who moves to 6-2 in MMA with this latest win, also paid tribute to Boukichou on social media, wishing his opponent a speedy recovery and opening the door for a potential rematch in the future.
While the method of victory will not have been what he wanted, the 25-year-old, who is also 1-0 in pro boxing and has trained with Tyson Fury, will now move onto bigger and better things in Cage Warriors.
