Following the recent sacking of Claude Puel, Leicester City have wasted no time in appointing the Frenchman’s successor. They have managed to swiftly negotiate a deal with Celtic for the services of manager Brendan Rodgers.
Leicester confirmed the announcement of the 46-year-old prior to their Tuesday evening clash with Brighton & Hove Albion, with Rodgers signing a contract up until 2022. It’s been almost six years since the Scotsman left the Premier League, following his sacking by Liverpool, and he will be keen to make a strong impact as we approach the business end of the season.
Rodgers comes back to the Premier League after a glittering career up in Scotland, which saw him lift seven trophies and he’s left the Glasgow club on course for their third straight domestic treble. This, despite the reemergence of a Steven Gerrard-lead Rangers. Rodgers will watch the game against Brighton from the stands, before fully taking charge with a view to the Foxes’ weekend game against Watford.
Fans will be pleased to hear that Rodgers is also bringing Kolo Toure with him to Leicester, who will be part of the coaching team at the King Power Stadium.
During his tenure as Liverpool manager, Rodgers became famous (some may say infamous) for frequently saying that his side showed great character, regardless of the result or performance. However, character is what this Leicester side currently need as they sit 12th in the table as things stand.
Yet, they had lost their mentality and were devoid of a distinct playing style under Puel. The rigid defensive attitude coupled with lightning-quick counter attacks that they had become known for during their incredible title winning season under Claudio Ranieri had gone, and their was a new emphasis on possession. However, the possession often went nowhere resulting in an abundance of side-ways passing and no real goal threats.
However, Rodgers will be looking to bring back the attacking intensity and ferocity that his Liverpool side were known for. That, and bringing key players such as Jamie Vardy back on track whilst continuing to develop the club’s impressive youth products, will be Rodgers immediate goals as he aims to steer the club to a top half finish.
