The Square Enix Avengers Project: What do we want to see?

Share

Everyone was pretty hyped up when Square first announced they would be working on an Avengers game. But since then, nothing is really being said about the project.

In light of this, as well as the impending release of Avengers: Endgame, that’s why we’re speculating today on what we would like to see in the Avengers Project, if and when it does come out. Interestingly, we already have some precedent for an Avengers game and some idea of what a modern title would look like.

Those of us that remember the cancelled THQ project have some idea of what a first-person perspective game would look like. Yet that might not be the route that Square takes with the IP.

That said, here are some things we would like to see in the Avengers game.

Open world

Probably the biggest thing that the Avengers game needs to have is an open-world format. This is almost the standard for every new game coming out these days and the Avengers won’t escape this trend.

On top of being the standard, an open world also offers endless possibilities for customization and expansion. You can endlessly iterate on this concept and add new content. In addition, you can fill the world with side quests and other mechanics to sap up a gamer’s time.

Given that, an Avengers open-world game might be pretty gigantic and we don’t know how Square would pull that off. Do we roam around all of Earth? Some portion of it? And why would that make sense? After all, the Avengers are a pretty international bunch. Still, the chance to go all out for the Avengers needs to be seized and the first sign Square is doing that would be a big, open-world game.

RPG levelling

It needs to have a coherent levelling system that isn’t grindy but remains compelling throughout. Whether this is through improved abilities or whatever, there needs to be some kind of progression system. Again, we’re not the geniuses that Square’s devs are but we do think the Avengers universe is more than large enough to provide a variety of “classes” and characters for gamers to level.

Endless story: One true opportunity for games as a service to work

With the Avengers game, Square has a real opportunity to make the games-as-a-service model work. A huge world with consistent DLC is almost too much for any Marvel fanboy or gamer to resist. We’re thinking something like GTA Online but with the Avengers.

One thing that makes this kind of model successful is constant, high-quality content. We’re sure Square can handle it and the Avengers canon provides more than enough storylines for gamers to explore.

Customisation

We don’t know exactly how Square will pull this one off but there needs to be some degree of customization. Whether it is outfits, abilities, gear, or what have you, the Avengers need to be somewhat configurable by the player. Of course, given the huge canon of Avengers titles, there’s probably a lot of stuff to draw on here.
