What was the biggest reveal at Sony’s PlayStation State of Play?

Share

Some people might criticise Sony’s PS4 State of Play as being nothing more than a Nintendo Direct rip off. And that’s not far off the mark.

Nonetheless, Sony still revealed a wealth of information to us that shed some light on the future direction of both the company and the PS4 in these last years of the current console generation. So the biggest question you might have is: What was the biggest reveal at Sony’s State of Play?

Of course, the answer is going to be purely opinion – there was a little something for everyone during the presentation.

Concrete Genie and Days Gone

Concrete Genie and Days Gone were probably two of the biggest for mainline gamers. Combining a “Secret Life of a Wallflower”-vibe with a 1980s teenage comedy movie, Concrete Genie is about a guy named Ash and his attempt to restore his abandoned hometown using a magic brush. The gameplay is reminiscent of the innovative yet commercially unsuccessful Epic Mickey games that game out years ago.

The second, a zombie survival-horror game, is promising a The Last of Us-type of vibe which is more than enough to get most people to pre-order it. For those of you that didn’t get a chance to play The Last of Us, the game was an action-heavy game with a deep narrative and immersive gameplay. It is also considered a modern masterpiece by many critics.

Aside from these titles, there was some the resurrected IP, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fuelled, and the next iteration in the Mortal Kombat series, MK11. But where Sony’s State of Play really wowed audiences was in the variety of VR games discussed. First, No Man’s Sky, the beleaguered space exploration game, is making its way to PSVR in what is probably the biggest game to make its way to virtual reality in quite a while. There’s also a Five Nights at Freddy’s VR game on the way.

Previously announced for the Oculus, Observation joins the popular space VR games and is a mystery about the disappearance of a space station’s crew.

Iron Man VR

The biggest reveal at Sony’s State of Play has to be Iron Man VR – by far. Not only is one of Marvel’s biggest names coming to PSVR, but what Sony showed off looks extremely immersive and exactly like what anyone could ever want in a Tony Stark simulator.

To be fair, not a lot was revealed. Yet it symbolises a seismic shift in the way VR is being pursued by Sony and what that means for the PlayStation brand. An Iron Man VR game could be the killer app that is needed to finally help virtual reality video games break out into the mainstream. That’s because VR has relied on ports of mainline experiences to draw in new players. Those games developed exclusively for VR, even the most successful ones, barely register with the general gaming public.

But everyone knows who Iron Man is, and pretty much anyone can imagine that a VR game simulating Tony Stark’s abilities could be a killer game. All of that is why, in our humble opinion, Iron Man VR was by far the biggest reveal at Sony’s State of Play because it shows us a future vision for gaming that the other announcements lack.
