The position of left-back seems to have been questionable for some time via City fans, with the likes of Fabian Delph and Oleksandr Zinchenko usually filling in for the injury-prone Benjamin Mendy. Yes, this shows the versatility of Pep Guardiola’s side, but who are stronger options for left-back if they are to reach the next level?
As rumoured several months ago, Man City and Arsenal could be leading the way to sign this Spanish superstar who is currently making his trade with Benfica in Primeira Liga. After coming through the youth ranks at Barcelona, Guardiola has a common connection with the 23-year old and assisted his development whilst at Barcelona B leading to his bargain sale of €1.5m in 2015. Grimaldo is commonly known to come forward well with the ball and can also do a great job tracking back, a potentially cheaper and perfect fit for the current Premier League Champions.
Staying in Portugal, Alex Telles could be another option for City. With a devastating left foot and an eye for that perfect set-piece, FC Porto’s left-back has recently become a fan favourite in North West Portugal. The Brazilian International has just made his debut for the five-time World Cup winners and looks set to develop further at just the tender age of 26. After making his trade in Brazil as a youngster with Juventude and Gremio, Telles made the move to Europe by signing with Turkish giants Galatasaray before joining Porto in 2016.
A bit closer to home now as Man City could seek the signature of Leicester City star, Ben Chilwell. The youth product has come through the ranks at The King Power Stadium and has even steadied himself into Gareth Southgate’s England side on a regular basis. The 22-year old has heavily impressed this season and there is no doubt that one of the big clubs could come calling, including the likes of Manchester City.
