Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler looks set to be named as the new Brisbane Roar manager, according to reports.
The announcement looks to be made by The Roar on Thursday, with Fowler set to be watching the A-League’s penultimate game of the season against Adelaide United. Brisbane currently sit second-to-bottom in the A-League, with Central Coast Mariners only below them.
The 44-year old made over 250 appearances for The Reds during an eight-year spell with the club, crossing over two separate times. Fowler currently sits sixth on the All-Time Premier League Top Goalscorers list and could now make a huge impression in Australia with a huge following and publicity from the UK.
But, this isn’t the first time Fowler has made the move down-under after previously playing for North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory between 2009-2011. This proved to be towards the end of his career, before joining Thai side Muangthong United.
Located on the ‘Gold Coast’ of Australia, the weather may be perfect for Fowler but this will be no easy task at the Suncorp Stadium. With 52,000 supporters roaring their side on a weekly basis, Brisbane have the biggest stadium in the league and feature Australian legend Matt McKay and former Aston Villa winger, Brett Holman within their ranks.
Brisbane sit second in the all-time A-League rankings, but could be overtaken this week if Sydney FC manage to beat Newcastle Jets on Saturday. The Roar have also won three Grand Finals since 2005 with supporters wanting to bring the title back onto the Gold Coast.
Roar are currently under the leadership of Indonesian businessman, Rahim Soekasah, who wishes to bring silverware back towards the Suncorp lead the interview with Fowler. He was rumoured to be impressed with his knowledge within the A-League and his penultimate plans to move the city of Brisbane forward, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
