David Ospina has hinted that he wants to leave Arsenal to join Napoli permanently this summer. After the Gunners brought in German Bernd Leno last summer, Ospina was deemed surplus to requirements at the Emirates and subsequently shipped out on loan to Napoli.
He has been impressive for the Serie A side this season whenever called upon whilst rotating the number one position with the impressive Alex Meret under Carlo Ancelotti. Napoli will have an option to purchase Ospina permanently at the end of the season and it will be very surprising if they do not exercise this considering that the Colombian has had a commanding presence in goal for them.
The 30-year-old arrived at the Gunners back in the summer of 2014 after having impressed for Colombia during the 2014 World Cup in Russia. He cost the Gunners, who were then managed by Arsene Wenger, just £3 million from Ligue 1 outfit Nice.
Speaking after his side’s 2-1 defeat against Atalanta on Monday, Ospina seemingly indicated that he is intent on remaining with Napoli beyond this season. “One would always like to play,” he said as quoted by Napoli Gol. “My future? My hope is to stay in Naples, we will decide with the club at the end of the season.”
The Gunners, meanwhile, will likely have to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer. Leno looks set to remain as first-choice shot-stopper for the near-future. However, veteran Petr Cech is due to retire at the end of this season. They will need to bring in suitable cover and competition for Leno.
Arsenal may consider a potential approach for one of Burnley duo Joe Hart or Nick Pope, who have both played second fiddle to Jordan Pickford this season. Another option that they can consider is recruiting Neil Etheridge of Cardiff City. The Phillippines international has been impressive for the Bluebirds and if they are relegated, he may consider a move to the Gunners as attractive.
