Arsenal are rumoured to have got their summer transfer business off and running, and apparently have made a bid for Argentina international Walter Kanneman, according to a report published by talkSport. The 28-year-old currently plies his trade for Gremio in Brazil and the report added that the Gunners have made a £10.5 million bid for the player’s services. Such a fee represents a bargain in today’s football market.
The player is set to quit his current club this summer and challenge himself in Europe, with Sampdoria and Milan also reported to be interested in his services. The Gunners are desperate to bolster their defensive ranks this summer and Kanneman can definitely increase the strength in depth in the defensive department should they sign him.
Unai Emery’s side have had yet another season full of ups and downs and mixed emotions. They certainly are a much improved side as compared to what they were during Arsene Wenger’s last two seasons in charge of the club, though they do clearly need to bolster their side this summer if they want to challenge for a top four finish.
The area which is especially in need of reinforcement is the defensive department. Shkodran Mustafi was not impressive this season and the German should be one of the players who departs this summer. Other defensive players whose futures at the club are uncertain include Stephen Lichsteiner and Laurent Koscielny.
Kanneman could be a good starting block for an overhaul of the back line. Kanneman joined Gremio in 2016 and has gone on to make 54 League appearances for the club, scoring just one goal.
He began his career with San Lorenzo in his native Argentina and went on to make 69 appearances for them, before joining Mexican club Atlast in 2015. Kanneman made his debut for Argentina in September 2018 and has since gone on to win five caps for his country. However, he has recently picked up an injury which will unfortunately keep him out of this summer’s Copa America.
Would Kanneman be the defensive linchpin Arsenal need? Let us know in the comments!
