Spurs manager Pochettino warns of “painful” rebuilding job

Share

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has warned that a painful rebuilding job lies ahead if his club are to get to the same level as their new stadium.

Pochettino took over Spurs in 2014 and has done an impressive job. He has transformed the club from a mid-table outfit into a leading power domestically and has come close to winning the Premier League twice already. Impressively, he has done this with a modest transfer budget and has a net spend on transfers of £30 million.

Ending the Trophy Drought

Something which Pochettino and Spurs have failed to do is land a major trophy. The last time that the club won a significant piece of silverware dates back 11 years. A lack of trophies at the club since that League Cup success in 2008 could lead to some big name departures this summer with several big names rumoured to be looking for a move.

Some players from Spurs who have been linked with moves away from the club this summer include Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose. Fringe players Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente are almost certain to leave the club this summer for fresh challenges.

Speaking about what lies ahead for his club, Pochettino said as quoted by The Express: “When you talk about Tottenham, everyone says you have an amazing house but you need to put in the furniture.

“If you want to have a lovely house maybe you need better furniture. And it depends on your budget if you are going to spend money. We need to be respectful with teams like Manchester City or Liverpool who spend a lot of money. We are brave, we are clever, we are creative.

Spurs are going to be up against it this summer with several rivals set to spend again; they will have to ensure that they make a number of quality signings.
