Surrey sign Imran Tahir for T20 Blast

Share
South African spinner Imran Tahir is set to join Surrey for the entirety of their T20 blast campaign. Tahir becomes the second overseas player to agree to play for Surrey in the competition, following in the footsteps of Australia’s Aaron Finch.

Tahir was the top wicket-taker during the IPL as he took 26 wickets from just 17 innings. He helped the Chennai Super Kings to reach the final of the competition, where they eventually lost against Mumbai Indians. Tahir is, without a doubt, one of the best limited overs spinners in the world and he should be able to add a lot of quality to the Surrey bowling department, he will also provide great value for money.

Tahir takes to T20

The 40-year-old is set to retire from One Day International Cricket at the end of South Africa’s 2019 World Cup campaign. Born in Pakistan, Tahir is a naturalized South African citizen and has been playing for his adopted country since 2011, after making his debut during the 2011 World Cup in India. He is widely regarded as being arguably the best South African limited overs spinner of all-time. He’s also become famous for his, arguably, over the top celebrations.

His test career yielded mixed results. He played 20 tests for South Africa between 2011-2015, and took just 57 wickets. He was not called up again after playing against India in December 2015. However, fans were delighted to hear that he is set to continue representing South Africa in T20 matches, even after the World Cup in England this year and could even play during the ICC T20 Challenge next year.
One of the interesting facts about Tahir is that it was he that bowled the ball which ended the professional cricket career of legendary South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher, way back in 2012. In a freak incident during a practice session, the ball struck the eye of Boucher. He was forced to retire from professional cricket or risk permanent damage to his eye.
