While the 2,000 Guineas looks fairly straightforward for Magna Grecia, stablemate Hermosa may have a tough ask in her bid to land back-to-back renewals of the 1,000 Guineas either side of the Irish Sea.
The daughter of Galileo seemingly got a bit of a soft lead in her 1,000 Guineas success and while she’s open to improvement, it’s more likely that she will be seen at her very best over further than this, perhaps in the Oaks at Epsom next week or the Irish equivalent in July.
Many of her rivals at Newmarket will have been more concerned about the likes of stablemates Just Wonderful and Fairyland who both appeared ahead of Hermosa on jockey bookings as well as the likes of strong ante post favourite Qabala.
However, Wayne Lordan was allowed to dictate terms, setting good, even fractions before her stamina kicked in when meeting the dip. While she’s not one to entirely rule out, there’s a runner at a bigger price that looks interesting.
There was a whole like to like about the way East ran in the Breeders’ Cup juvenile turf back in November when runner-up to the mightily impressive Newspaperofrecord and she can resume progress here.
While she wasn’t seen at her best last time out in the Poule D’essai Pouliches at Longchamp, she was too fresh in the early stages and that will have done her no favours in a Group 1 event. That race developed into a sprint at the two furlong pole, something that East will have been unsuited by and she will prefer the end to end gallop that is assured in the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday.
She’s available to back at 10/1 and could be the each-way play in the Irish Classic.
