Everything we know about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot

Share

One of the biggest pieces of news that came out over the past week or so was that Activision’s Call of Duty franchise had a new game out. However, not just any new game, rather a complete reboot of its classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare; because, let’s face it, a sequel to a Call of Duty game is nothing shocking.

What would be shocking would be if there wasn’t a sequel to Call of Duty coming out. The franchise pumps them out with remarkable regulatory and we continue to lap them up, even if less now than we did before. So what do we know about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot? We’ll tell you all we can.

Single-Player Story Mode?

Like any reboot, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to be some kind of “return to form” for the series. That probably means a new emphasis on multiplayer gaming, especially given how important COD is for eSports, but there was also the revelation that a variation of a single-player story mode/campaign was going to be a part of the game.

That’s huge news for people into that kind of thing but it was also puzzling for those of us that didn’t expect that type of gameplay to make a return to a COD game. Moving beyond that, one thing that we heard that has some veteran players concerned is that the online game is going to somehow be “more accessible” to new players. Whether that means a more variegated online ranking system, no one really knows, but it always smacks of dumbing down when devs say things like that; if there is one thing that gamers don’t like, it is the perceived “dumbing down” of a franchise.

New Narrative

What Activision has made clear is that, while this is a reboot of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a game that came out in 2007, it is not a remake of that game. Again, that means there will be a new narrative and probably a modernized multiplayer game. It’s unlikely that anyone wants a remake of any COD story from what we can tell, but there are certain mechanics, stages, and conceits that veteran players would like to see return. Plus, the modern importance of sub games like Zombies is not to be ignored and will probably be an even bigger part of the rebooted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Another interesting factor that we learned about the rebooted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is that progress from the campaign, in whatever form that might be, somehow carries over to the multiplayer game. It could be a leveling thing or unlocking weapons or even something as simple as gear. Whatever it means, one thing is clear from that statement: The campaign game isn’t going to be entirely optional for the hardcore among us and that is a different approach than used in the past. Heck, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 didn’t even have a campaign for that matter.
