Word began to spread two weeks ago that Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda had passed away, aged 70.
One of the more disturbing predictions made by Lauda was that seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher would never recover to his old-self. The 50-year-old Schumacher suffered severe injuries in a ski accident in 2013. Since then, there have been few details released to the public about the condition of the former Ferrari driver. His family have chosen to keep his affairs private, in line with what Schumacher was known to do during his racing career.
Lauda said: “I pray to God that it will all end well, but sadly it doesn’t seem that way at the moment.
“He decides things we cannot understand. I find it completely shocking and unexplainable why this great driver, who won seven championships in over 300 races and stayed alive, could have something like this happen to him.”
Lauda himself had a near brush with death in 1970; left scarred during a crash at the German Grand Prix. During his distinguished career, he won the title with Ferrari in 1975 and 1977. He went on to enjoy an Indian summer in his career, winning the title with McLaren in 1984.
New fans were introduced to Lauda in 2013. Hit movie Rush showcased his rivalry with 1976 World Champion James Hunt. After his racing career came to an end, Lauda became an airline entrepreneur. He later went on to work as the non-executive chairman for the Formula 1 Mercedes team. He played an important role, bringing Lewis Hamilton to the team following Schumacher’s second retirement from the sport in 2012.
“His unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur are and will remain unforgettable. His tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage to remain a role model and a benchmark for all of us,” his family’s statement said.
