Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is being linked with a move away from the club. The Spaniard’s current contract is due to expire during the summer of 2020 and he has yet to agree to a new deal, meaning that the club will either have to sell him this summer or risk potentially losing him on a free transfer next summer.
The Spaniard endured a very below par season, and could be set for a new challenge according to various media reports. The following are two players that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer can consider making his first-choice keeper next season, should the 28-year-old decide to leave United
United can look to promote from within and make current second-choice keeper Romero their first-choice. The club needs to prioritize signing a new striker, right-back and centre-back this summer. One can argue that even if De Gea leaves, signing a new goalkeeper immediately will not be a key priority as the Argentine is more than capable of doing the job.
At 32, and boasting 96 caps for Argentina, Romero is vastly experienced at the highest level. He has only been used sparingly since his arrival at United in 2015, but has looked solid whenever called upon. Should Romero be made first-choice, the Red Devils can potentially look at recalling Dean Henderson from his loan spell with Sheffield United and making him number two and the long-term successor to Romero.
The 23-year-old is one of the most highly-rated up and coming goalkeepers in Europe. He was a first-team regular and star of the Ajax Amsterdam side which won the Eredivisie and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League during the past season.
Onana is blessed with good height and is also good with the ball at his feet. He has the potential to develop into one of the top keepers in the world under the correct guidance. By acquiring him now, United could potentially save themselves millions and have one of the best keepers in Europe in future years to come.
It remains to be seen whether United will be able to keep hold of one of the greatest keepers the world have ever seen. However, there are replacement options Solksjaer can look towards to help rebuild United
