The start of the new NFL calendar is set to flip over on Friday, March 13. While teams have begun setting up trades, such as the trade involving Joe Flacco and the Denver Broncos, deals cannot become official until then.
Along with working out potential trades, sides can officially start applying the franchise tag. For some teams, the new calendar can’t come fast enough, as the need to retool their franchise for the 2019 NFL season is a need. This includes a variety of teams around the NFL that are in need or will be in the market for a new quarterback.
While the Denver Broncos have landed their potential starting quarterback for the upcoming season, there are a few other teams that have not – here are the franchises that could be in the market for a new quarterback during the 2019 NFL off-season and NFL Draft.
Currently, the New York Giants are set, with veteran quarterback Eli Manning under center heading into the 2019 NFL season. That said, depending on the path the team elects to take leading into free agency and the NFL draft, they could look for a potential trade partner to shed the salary impact of Manning while acquiring a draft pick.
This would open up the door for the Giants to look to go with a younger option as the team rebuilds around second year running back Saquon Barkley. One name that continues to be linked to the Giants is Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who should go within the first round of the NFL draft. While the draft is an interesting option, another name that could be on the Giants radar that won’t cost the team a pick is Teddy Bridgewater.
Potential Quarterback Targets: Dwayne Haskins (Draft), Teddy Bridgewater (FA), Daniel Jones (Draft)
Much like the Giants, the Jaguars currently have quarterback Blake Bortles under contract for the upcoming 2019 NFL season. That said, the lack of consistently from Bortles, on a team that is stacked with talent on the defensive side of the ball, could be costing the team a chance to make a deep playoff run over the past few seasons. While a release would still hold a $16.5 million dollar cap hit, the team could elect to move on from him while saving $4.5 million towards the cap.
Two names that have been linked to the team are Joe Flacco, who is no longer available, and Nick Foles. Despite being a possible option, can the Jaguars afford to take on another big contract under center? Another option would be for the Jaguars to look to draft to a player such as Haskins or even Kyler Murray as possible first year options. The team could also look to a veteran who would cost less on the market such as Tyrod Taylor or Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Potential Quarterback Targets: Nick Foles (Trade), Kyler Murray (Draft), Ryan Fitzpatrick (FA)
After failing to succeed with Ryan Tannehill under center, the rumors have the Dolphins on the market to find a replacement under center during the 2019 NFL offseason. While the team currently holds the 13th overall pick during the 2019 NFL draft, the idea of Haskins possibly falling is unlikely.
The Dolphins could look for a stop-gap option such as Teddy Bridgewater or Ryan Fitzpatrick, while finding the quarterback of the future. The team could also look to trade back into the latter half of the first round or possible into the second round to build up draft picks but also position them in a spot to take a look at the second half of the quarterback class of the draft such as Murray, Will Grier, Daniel Jones and Ryan Finley.
Possible Quarterback Targets: Teddy Bridgewater (FA), Daniel Jones (Draft), Ryan Finley (Draft)
Another name on the list of teams that will be in search of a quarterback is the Washington Redskins, after losing Alex Smith to a gruesome leg injury during the 2018 NFL Season. While question marks lie with whether or not Smith will every return to the field, the team needs to turn their attention to the NFL draft in 2019 while also adding a veteran to help fill the hole this season.
A few names on the teams list could be a few quarterbacks who could be released, including Case Keenum and Ryan Tannehill. Keenum who is now expandable after the Broncos acquired Joe Flacco could save the team over $11 million dollars in free agency. The team will also consider a quarterback in the NFL draft.
Possible Quarterback Targets: Case Keenum (If released), Ryan Tannehill (If released), Clayton Thorson (Draft)
Other teams that could be in the market for a quarterback this offseason include the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans, while teams like the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots could look to draft their quarterback of the future.
