We’re still waiting to see how the 2018 NFL Draft class of wide receivers turn out. While the impact of the likes of Calvin Ridley Jr, Courtland Sutton and D.J. Moore remains to be seen, previous classes have had their share of receivers that have not rewarded the teams that drafted them.
Between 2014 and 2017, 18 wide receivers were drafted in the first round and – outside of the 2014 NFL Draft, which saw Evans, Beckham, Sammy Watkins and Brandin Cooks become proven producers – they’ve largely struggled.
Despite all this, with an interesting group of receivers in the 2019 NFL Draft, the class has the potential to produce some solid NFL weapons. Here is a list of some potential game-changers at the wide receiver position during the 2019 NFL Draft.
Metcalf has the size and quickness to be an elusive receiver at the NFL level. Along with his size and speed, his physical ability to play the ball as well as his physical ability to go get the ball makes him a standout wide receiver in this draft. The former Ole Miss star can also run in and out of his cuts while running routes but also can go out on vertical routes. His ability to do it all makes him the possible first receiver drafted in this year’s class.
While Harmon might not hear his name called on day one of the 2019 NFL Draft, he is one of those options that could sneak along into the second round and be a very productive wide receiver. Harmon possesses strength, has size at 6’2’’ that can fit into nearly any system in the NFL. One of his strongest traits is his ability to locate the football allowing him to make the necessary adjustments to catch the ball. Along with his ability to catch the ball, Harmon is not a selfish player who can also be very valuable in blocking for his running backs.
It’s hard to imagine how good Campbell could be at the next level but his speed should make him a very interesting draft target for most teams in the NFL. While some concerns have been with his ability to run fluid routes, Campbell could be the perfect type of deep threat for a team that has a solid possession type receiver. Look for Campbell to put up some big-time numbers at the NFL level while making defenses adjust their game plans.
Harry is one of those players every team falls in love with leading into the NFL combine as well as their Pro Days. Unfortunately for most teams in the latter half of the first round this could mean missing out on a player that was originally slated to drop. When you look at him on paper he is just a freak at 6’4’’ inches and has the speed and footwork to make plays after catching the ball. Along with being a threat in the passing attack he also showed his ability to be featured in trick plays and end-arounds.
Other wide receivers to watch for include A.J. Brown, Deebo Samuel, Riley Ridley & JJ Arcega-Whiteside.
