WBA and WBC Middleweight Champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has revealed his ambition to have at least three fights in 2019. If the Mexican does end up fighting three times this year, it will be the first time since 2011 that he has done so.
2018 was a good year for Alvarez, as he became the first man ever to record a victory over Gennady Golovkin after a points victory in September. The decision came with much controversy however, as many believed that it was ‘GGG’ who should have won the fight despite everyone agreeing that it was close. He then made easy work of Rocky Fielding in December, defeating him in three rounds.
There have been several times during his career in which Canelo could have had three fights in one calendar year, however these fights often had to be called off due to his injury problems. He returns to the ring on May 4th when he takes on IBF World Champion Daniel Jacobs at the T-Arena in a unification bout.
Canelo will be the favourite in the match against Jacobs. The 32-year-old Jacobs boasts a record of 37 fights, 35 wins and two losses. His last loss came in March 2017 when he lost against Golovkin.
The 28-year-old Canelo meanwhile boasts a record of 51 wins from 54 fights with two draws and one loss. His sole defeat came against Floyd Mayweather back in 2011 via points.
“Our goal is May and September. After the second fight, [a third one] will depend how I feel and I have to rest. If everything goes well I could have a third fight in the year,” Canelo said.
This year, Canelo intends to fight in September as part of Mexican Independence Day weekend. He aims to have a third fight which could possibly take place in December.
