Manchester City dealt major injury blow

Share

Manchester City got some bittersweet revenge over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday after they defeated the Lilywhites 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Youngster Phil Foden scored the only goal of the game during the fifth minute.

There were many positives to take from the game for City. However, Pep Guardiola’s side also suffered a blow after midfielder Kevin de Bruyne suffered an injury, which could rule the Belgian out of the Manchester derby on Wednesday. Since making his return to action from injury in December, de Bruyne has been one of the key players for Guardiola’s side. He has made 18 Premier League appearances this season, scoring two goals and also recording two assists.

The game against United will be crucial and is arguably City’s hardest remaining fixture this season. They will, however, be the firm favourites to defeat their arch-rivals after the Red Devils slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. After playing United, City will be up against Burnley and Leicester City, before taking on Brighton in their last game of the season.

“I didn’t speak with him or the doctors but it’s a muscular injury,” said City boss Pep Guardiola, as quoted by Lancashire Live.

“I don’t know how big the impact is. We will see tomorrow – but I think the next game he will be out.”

The 27-year-old de Bruyne is regarded as one of the deadliest attackers in the Premier League. Since joining City in 2015 from German club Wolfsburg, he has gone on to play 115 times in the Premier League for the club, scoring 23 goals. He has helped the club win one Premier League title and three League Cups.
