Premier League Big Six: Season ratings for 2018/19

Share

With the end of the year just around the corner, it might be time to take a look at the overall season ratings for all of the ‘big six’ clubs in England. Who, then, has enjoyed a season of highs – and who is praying for something more next year?

Manchester City

The likely title winners will, even if they miss out, have had a great season. Incredible consistency in the league and the cups has seen them en route for a quadruple until Tottenham Hotspur ended their UEFA Champions League dream.

Still very much likely to win the title – especially following their recent derby win – City have had a season to remember for so many reasons.

Liverpool

The Reds have also enjoyed a wonderful season – even if a maiden Premier League title is now out of their own hands. However, for the Reds, making up a 20+ gap deficit on City this season is already hugely impressive. Liverpool have just set the standard for what they should be doing for the many years to come: competing to get 90+ points season-in, season-out. A great season for the Reds, even if it ends without a trophy.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, have endured rather than enjoyed their season. Horror under Jose Mourinho was brought to an end with the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The feelgood factor has worn off a bit, though, and United now face up to the reality of needing to make many signings (and lose many squad players) whilst catching up to Liverpool and City. A daunting year which has opened the eyes of many United fans hoping for a quick return to success.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs have been arguably the surprise package of the season. Slated for not making a single signing in the summer of 2018, they’ve answered that with a sustained run in the top four and a run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. A great season for Spurs in general, though the fact it will likely end without silverware means that for Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino, the long wait to earmark this era of apparent success with a trophy will continue on for a little while yet.

Chelsea

The Blues have had a relatively underwhelming campaign, relative to the talent in their squad. The likely loss of Eden Hazard, though, offers the chance to rebuild their team and start to refresh a side that has felt dated for some time. With a transfer ban to come, too, the Blues should be using what is left of the season to plan for the future. Overall, a pretty poor opening act for Maurizio Sarri, but he will still be eyeing his first ever trophy as they fight it out for the Europa League.

Arsenal

A decent enough first year under Unai Emery, as the Gunners are still in with a very strong chance of landing a Champions League place. They could win the Europa League and could push for something truly impressive in a top four finish. A shock home loss to Crystal Place followed by a humiliation by Wolves, though, will do nothing to full revive confidence and bravado in a support that has for so long gotten used to failure.
