Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente has revealed that his goal against Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals two weeks ago was the biggest of his career.
The Lilywhites ended up losing the second leg 4-3 on the night in an action-packed contest. However, they had won the first leg the previous week 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and ended up progressing via the away goals rule.
Llorente’s goal proved to be crucial in securing his side’s semi-final spot in the competition, although it was far from his greatest finish. “It was with my hip, it was my first one [like that]! But for sure it was the most important goal of my career because we passed to the semi-final of the Champions League and that is a very important thing,” he said, as quoted by the Mirror.
Llorente could have been out of Spurs last summer had the club managed to find a replacement for him. He has been rather frustrating this season to watch as he has struggled to find consistency, but there is little doubt that he will now have a special place in the heart of many Spurs fans after his goal against City.
Spurs now will be favourites to advance to the Champions League final as they take on Ajax Amsterdam in the semi-finals. The Dutch side, however, are not expected to be pushovers, especially when you consider that they have already managed to eliminate Real Madrid and Juventus from the competition this season.
Mauricio Pochettino will likely look to offload a number of Spurs players this summer and Llorente will probably be one of them. It would be a perfect sendoff for the veteran if he can help the club to land the Champions League title this season.
