Tottenham want to sign veteran Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, according to reports.
A report published by The Daily Mirror (via Calciomercato) has claimed that Tottenham are interested in signing Sturridge. Spurs are looking to provide cover and competition to Harry Kane.
The England international’s current contract at Anfield is set to expire at the end of the season. He is below Roberto Firmino in the Reds’ pecking order and resigned to being a fringe player within the Liverpool first team. This season, Sturridge has played 13 Premier League games, scoring two goals. Many feel the number 15 should move away from Anfield at the end of the season as it will be a move that will be of mutual benefit to the club and player.
You have to remember that Sturridge is 29 years old. He will not fundamentally improve as a player at this stage of his career so it is hard to see him working his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans on a regular basis. By letting him move on, Klopp could also free up space within his squad, which can be used to bring in a younger striker who can provide more intense competition to first-choice forward Firmino.
Meanwhile, over at Tottenham, Fernando Llorente finds himself in a similar position, and looks set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer. Since joining the club from Swansea in 2017, Llorente has not had the desired impact, struggling to provide adequate support to Kane. The Spaniard has also expressed a desire to return to his homeland before hanging up his boots.
When on form, Sturridge is still capable of churning out quality displays. Since joining Liverpool in 2013, he scored 50 goals from 111 Premier League appearances. By signing him, Spurs will be getting a striker who is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and has vast experience under his belt.
He will not be an ideal candidate to play regularly for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad but he can certainly provide good cover for Kane.
