Former Leicester City star Robert Huth is happy with his retirement from professional football. The 34-year-old announced last month that he would be retiring from professional football after being linked with a move to Championship club Derby County.

Huth is best remembered for playing a starring role for Leicester City along with N’Golo Kante, Jamie Vardy and Riyadh Mahrez during the 2015-16 season when they shocked the world of football and won the Premier League title. He went on to make 35 appearances for Claudio Ranieri’s side during that season and scored three goals.

The German international also boasts the rare distinction of having spent his entire senior professional career in England. He was signed by Chelsea as a youth player and went on to be integrated into the West London giants first team in 2002. While at Stamford Bridge, he was a fringe player and went on to make 42 Premier League appearances across four years. He also won two Premier League titles.

After leaving the Blues, he went on to have spells with the likes of Middlesbrough, Stoke City and Leicester before retiring. Internationally, Huth was capped 19 times by Germany and scored two goals. He was included in his country’s squads during the 2005 Confederations Cup and 2006 World Cup which were both played on home soil.

He appears to be relieved that he is no longer playing professionally.

“I woke up one morning and on my notifications there was this guy saying I was about to join Derby,” Huth told The Sun.

“It was total b******t. I hadn’t kicked a ball for four months. I had to put him straight.

“It was great for 17 years but it’s done. I don’t have to cling on to being a footballer any more.

“You know yourself, you make the decision and 10 seconds later, there’s a big sigh of relief. You don’t have to be a macho a******e any more, as can happen in such a competitive environment.

“I remember watching Liverpool v Man City last month and thinking: ‘I’m so happy I’m on the sofa. There’s no way I could keep up.'”

Frank Lampard, who is currently strongly linked to replace Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea, has seen Derby to just one point off the play-offs with hopes of promotion still well within their grasps. However, Huth is not set to join their ranks any time soon as they approach the pivotal stage of the season.#
