“Benitez won’t want Liverpool to win league”

Football pundit Andy Gray has claimed that Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez does not want Liverpool to win the Premier League this season.

Benitez managed the Reds between 2004-2010, failing to win the trophy in his time at the club. During his tenure at Anfield, he led the club to the Champions League in 2005 and to the FA Cup the following year. However, he struggled to challenge for the League though he did nearly guide the club to the top-flight title during the 2009/10 season when runners-up.

Liverpool next take on the north-east club this weekend.The Reds then play against Wolves in their final fixture of the season. City meanwhile are set to play against Leicester City next before taking on Brighton and Hove Albion during their final game of the season.

Liverpool with the tougher fixtures

Gray believes that City have an easier run in than Liverpool and he also believes that Newcastle may pose a big hurdle in Jurgen Klopp’s sides aims to claim the top-flight title for the first time since 1989.

“Leicester at home, I think they’ll feel confident of beating them, and Brighton,” Gray said of City as quoted by The Express. 

“Okay they might have to play really well to beat Brighton because they might need something in the last game.

“But I wouldn’t swap those two for what Liverpool have got. They’ve got to go to Newcastle who are going alright, who have got Rafa Benitez in charge.

“I don’t think he will want Liverpool to win the title because he didn’t.

“So he would want to win that game, and Wolves, you just don’t know, this is a Wolves side playing without any fear, happy where they are, want to finish in style.

“They could easily go to Anfield and upset them so I wouldn’t swap City’s two games for them.”
