Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he does not expect the club to make any January signings.
United started the season in underwhelming fashion and the club’s board sacked Jose Mourinho following his side’s defeat to Liverpool last month. Following the Portuguese’s dismissal, the Red Devils’ form has significantly improved.
Under Mourinho, United were devoid of confidence. It looked almost certain that they would not finish in the top four. However, they are now just six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and could set themselves a serious target of aiming to finish in the Champions League qualification places.
In spite of United’s improved form, many still think that they need to invest in recruiting new defenders as the centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly has not been particularly impressive. Many fans of United want the club to make new defensive signings. However, Solskjaer has no indicated that that is unlikely to happen this window; they will instead have to wait until the end of the season.
Mourinho publicly criticised the club for reportedly not backing him sufficiently in the transfer market last summer. The self-proclaimed ”special one” allegedly wanted to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, but the United board did not back such a move. Solskjaer has admitted that he does not expect any signings to arrive this month and said, as quoted by Goal: “I’m happy with the squad I’ve got.
“I don’t expect anyone to come in but obviously if the club have targeted and identified a few and I think they might fit here, I’ll give my thumbs up. But it’s not just my decision. Nobody had to tell me I had loads of talented players [to inherit at United]. I can see that from outside.”
